To begin with the interview, I'd like to know a bit about Coffins forming.I know that two of the three members in Coffins come from the great sludge band .dot[.] Why did you form this band and why did you choose the style of music you're playing? What happened with dot[.], did you disband? Coffins existed before from dot [.]. From the first, I and You(Drums) were old Coffins members. Since Coffins carried out the activity stop, we joined. But, dot [.] always had some problems among members. Furthermore, The band missed sound directivity and had strayed. So, I re-started Coffins with the consistent directivity. Band activity became active by this decision, and Igot a big feeling of fullness!! The music of Coffins can be described as a mix of Sludge/Doom in the old style played by bands like Winter or even Celtic Frost with some Death Metal vibes from Autopsy or the old swedish scene. Am I right? Which are the bands that gave you the idea of forming Coffins? As I said on my review, I find some similitudes between your music and the one Machetazo does, although your music is far more heavy and theirs faster, but perhaps you have the same kind of influences? Yeah, Your recognition is right!! We wanted to play in slow heavy band first. I approached slow heavy sound from the Hellhammer/Celtic Frost side. Because, the band which approaches from the Black Sabbath side is full of the present Doom scene. We didn't want to progress to the same line as those bands. So, we are big big influenced from Winter and Divine Eve. Of course, I was influenced also from other many old school Death bands (like Autopsy, Carnage, Nihilist, Grave...) Thrash bands (like Venom, Bathory, Slaughter, Master...) and Hardcore bands (like Discharge, ENT, Amebix, Anti Cimex...). I think that Machetazo should also love the same band. Especially we have received influence in each other from Corrupted strongly!! (What do you think, Dopi?? haha!!) You have now two releases under two different labels: the 2003 demo re-released by Living Dead Society as a miniCD, entitled Sacrifice to evil spirit and your first album, Mortuary in darkness under Razorback Records. Which are the main differences you see between them? How has been the response from the magazines and people for them? About "Sacrifice..."CD : This CD is only the album which Remastered and added the bonus to Demo 2003 CDR. But, I think that the label did good job. Phlege (WORMED) drew the cover. It's also fucking cool. About "Mortuary..." CD : This CD is the album which did recording newly. New version demo songs are also included. Although I thought that label and Chris did good job, we were seldom able to get satisfaction to this sound production. Yeah, of course We were able to hear the friendly opinion from many fucking cool zines (like you!!), fan's voices, and mails. We appreciate all supporters!! Both works were recorded at the Noise Room studios. What can you tell us about these studio? Is it a studio of yours or other albums have been recorded there? The ex.CROCODILE SKINK (Japanese crust core) member is managing this studio. Here, many Grind/Hardcore bands are doing recording. Our type band like is not... As there's no lyrics on any of your two CD's, I'd like to know a bit more about Coffins's lyrical world and it's influences. Do you speak about facts from your own lifes or it's just horror and doom in the classical style? By the way, do you like horror/gore films? I think Japan nowadays is one of the best places for that kind of movies, with so reknown ones like Ichi the Killer. Our lyrics was not released on 1st release. Because, our English is childish. It doesn't still change. So, the contents don't plan to write here. But, we may put in lyrics of 2nd songs on 2nd album. Recently, I seldom see horror/gore movies. (Of course I like!!) But, I think that horror/gore movies image which I looked at before is directly linked with our Coffins band image. What can you tell us about the band's live activity? Do you often play live? Any tour outside Japan in the coming future? Which bands would you like to play with? Our show is about 1 time every month. We are doing our Japan tour and tour support of visit-to-Japan bands. (We supported DEAD and NUNSLAUGHTER in the past and will be supported STARGAZER from Australia in May.) If money problems are clear, we will want to play overseas always!! We want to play in Europe some day. And I want to drink alcohol with many European friend bands. I want to have the new friend and new exchange which are not known yet haha!! The cover of Mortuary in darkness was done by Chris Moyen, well know for having done covers for a lot of underground bands, like Incantation, Goatlord, Blasphemy, Archgoat, etc... Why did you choose him? I think it perfectly fits with the music you can find on the album: dark, doomy and old-school.Which of it's previous works made you take the decision? I love the band which you described in the top. Therefore, I wanted him to also draw the my band release. Darkdoomy and Oldschool are very deep themes for us. We have mixed and taken in all darkdoomy and oldschool. What about the future now? I've seen on your website that you're going to release a second album for the german label Imperium Productions. Why don't you release it again on Razorback Records, weren't you satisfied with their work, or it's a goal for you to release every album on a different label, haha? Can you explain us a bit about the new songs for that album? And when will be released the split with Cianide?
Yes, We received no contacts from Razorback about the next release after 1st release. Although Razorback was great label, we didn't match the gore label color. So, we approached other death/black metal labels. And we will released 2nd album from Imperium Productions of Germany in the summer time. Chris will draw a jacket again. Old school death metal color will become strong from 1st. We are going to do the recording for Split w/Cianide in the end of next month. But, we also know nothing yet. Maybe... it will be released on after summer?? I think the japanese scene is, and has been for a long time, really productive, with a lot of cool bands, like Sabbat, SOB, CSSO, Defiled, Sigh, Corrupted(fucking gods!), Unholy Grave, dot[.] or, for sure, Coffins. Can you tell us any bands that sound interesting to you? And what about outside Japan? Many killer bands are still playing in Japan. Especially... ANATOMIA(ex.Transgressor - Doom death), GRUDGE(Doom grind), CHURCH OF MISERY(Doom rock), ETERNAL ELYSIUM (Doom rock) and GALLHAMMER (Doom black) are my friends and faves. Now... Jesu, Funebrarum, Scepter, Lair of the minotaur, Verminous and Necrovation are my faves overseas band. This is the end my friend. Just spread more Doom and Death over this planet. Good luck with Coffins. If you want to say something else... ONLY DEATHMETAL IS REAL!! Keep it 666!!
